Founded by the inventor of cat litter, Tidy Cats was originally called "Kitty Litter" and was renamed "Tidy Cat" (singular) in 1954. As such, the brand was owned by Edward Lowe Industries until 1990 when the company was renamed "Golden Cat Corporation" as part of a sale to New York and Chicago VCs. The brand was sold to Ralston Purina when Edward died in 1995. Then Purina joined Nestlé in 2001.
